Loneliness

Loneliness eats the edges of my soul
Only a half where I used to be whole
There was a time I couldn’t stand on my own
Now I’ll fend myself, yes see how I’ve grown

One faltering step landed me in your life
Now I’m the one causing you all of this strife
So walk away just like everyone else
Go out in the world and fend for yourself

A paper bag crown on a child’s tiny head
As he giggles and snuggles himself into bed
No more being cuddled ‘tween your mom and your dad
No more nightlights to stop the dreams going bad
No more dolls whose tears you must dry
When you’re too scared of the dark to break down and cry

Step out of this world of paper bag dreams
Step into that real world you’ve been longing to see
Experience the pain reality brings
Begin to wish for simpler things

Alone with your fear on this dark winter’s night
Afraid the monster will stay when you turn on the light
That monster of loneliness feeds on my soul
Chewing in half what used to be whole
No longer able to stand on my own
But I can admit; yes see how I’ve grown

One faltering step and I entered your life
But you haven’t left yet in spite of your strife
So join in my world of paper bag dreams
And forget what the word loneliness means
